Reading and Arithmetic Outcomes
The practices on the Our Practices page are the ordinary conditions of every morning. Some of the older children in the mixed-age community reach the levels below by the end of the kindergarten year. Few children remain until the end of the kindergarten year because of external admission pressure into larger schools. The outcomes below are those of the children who do stay.
Reading
Some of the older children read continuous text in front of parents. Parents open random pages from chapter books placed on the table. Children read the pages that are opened. The videos are unedited.
Books include Billy and Blaze by C.W. Anderson, The Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgliesh, The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh, Hachiko Waits by Lesléa Newman, Keep the Lights Burning Abbie by Peter and Connie Roop, Lady Lollipop by Dick King-Smith, Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan and Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Arithmetic
Some of the older children work with multiplication tables and double-digit arithmetic operations in front of parents. The videos are unedited.
These are results of the practices
These levels are ordinary for some of the older children here by the end of the kindergarten year. They are the result of continuous access to materials, no timetable, mixed-age community, and child-led work. They are not the result of a separate programme.
