What does a 2-year-old actually need from preschool?

He needs a morning his body can live in: mixed-age company, enough floor that nobody walks through his work, an adult he has had time to trust, real earth, grass, slopes, trees and daylight he can reach without waiting for a slot, and the right to finish the thing he started.

Are play school years important before formal school?

These early years, the play school years, get treated as not very consequential — the exact opposite of the truth. A holding place near the house, convenient enough, because nobody has said what a two-year-old actually needs, or what a wrong morning does to the system being built now, the same system that will still be making decisions years and decades later.

Why is my toddler more stressed at preschool than at home?

In centre-based care, study after study finds the opposite pattern in many toddlers: cortisol rises from mid-morning to mid-afternoon on days they are in the centre, and falls on days they are at home. The effect is strongest under about three years of age. It is sharper during the first weeks of separation from the parent or the home nanny.

Can preschool stress affect my child later in life?

High infant and toddler cortisol predicts lower executive function later. After adaptation to preschool, higher cortisol has been tied to weaker attentional and inhibitory control. Flatter or blunted later patterns relate to weaker effortful control — the laboratory name for stopping yourself and waiting.

How long does a toddler take to settle in preschool?

Secondary attachment — the child using a new adult as a secure base the way they use you or the home nanny — is measured in months, not in a fortnight. The parent or nanny needs to be allowed inside the room and the garden, not stopped at a reception desk, until the child can walk away and walk back. There is no honest countdown. Some children take three weeks. Some take three months.

Is two weeks enough for a toddler to settle at preschool?

A toddler who has spent every waking hour with you or a nanny since birth cannot, in ten working days, transfer that bond to a teacher who also has 6-9 other children and a timetable. What looks like “settled” at day twelve is often shutdown. The crying stopped because protest did not bring you back.

Should I stay with my toddler at preschool in Gurgaon?

The parent or nanny needs to be allowed inside the room and the garden, not stopped at a reception desk, until the child can walk away and walk back. There is no honest countdown. Some children take three weeks. Some take three months. A school that needs you gone by Friday so the programme can start is telling you who the morning is for.

Why is a fixed preschool timetable hard for toddlers?

Fifteen or twenty toddlers will never, on the same morning, all be hungry, all be ready to sit, all be finished with a puzzle, all be willing to sing, all have slept enough. That is not a staffing problem. That is the species. A two-year-old’s state changes in twenty minutes. An adult-written timetable treats those states as noise.

How much indoor space does a toddler need in preschool?

When researchers measured toddlers’ morning cortisol across eight centres, levels rose when usable playroom space fell below about five square metres per child — roughly 54 square feet. The licensing minimum of about 35 square feet is a fire-code number, not a room in which a two-year-old can be himself, concentrate.

Is a same-age playschool classroom traditional in India?

Age-graded preschool is only a twentieth-century idea. In India, the packed same-age playschool — one batch, two teachers, a corridor, a fixed 9:30 activity — is barely a generation old as the default for affluent urban families.

What should I look for when visiting a preschool in Gurgaon?

Bring the child. Stay. The only review that counts is the one your toddler’s shoulders write after forty minutes. Watch whether work is interrupted by a timetable. Count how many children share the room, and how many square feet they actually have once shelves are subtracted. See whether the garden is a door or a slot. Ask how long the same adults have been in that building. Ask what happens if your child arrives at 10:15 because he slept. Ask whether you or the nanny may sit inside — not in a parents’ lounge — until goodbye is easy, with no date by which you must vanish.
